History of Tennis: 1 The first championships at Wimbledon, in London were played in 1877. 2 The U.S. Open was first held in 1881. 3 The U.S. National Women’s Singles Championships were first held in 1887. 4 The French Open was first held in 1891 in France. 5 In 1912, the International Lawn Tennis Federation was created in Paris. 6 In August 1900 the first Davis Cup match was held between Britain and the United States at the Longwood Cricket Club, Boston. 7 Wimbledon, U.S. Open, Australian Open, and French Open are the most prestigious events in tennis. Together these four events are called the Grand Slam. 8 In 1884 a women’s singles events was played at Wimbledon for the first time, and 13 women competed.
