Mike Matusow, The Man, The Myth, The Mouth
Mike Matusow is one of professional pokers most colorful characters. Featured in the “Bad Boys of Poker” painting by Darci Faulkner, Mike Matusow has certainly earned his nickname “TheMouth”. Mike got his start in poker as a dealer. Where he says he learned every detail of the game, studied players, and took mental notes of everything he witnessed. Finally, he entered a small poker tournament and won it, prompting him to play more tournaments, build his bankroll, and enter the cash game scene. Local players quickly realized that he was a skillful player, especially in hold’em and Omaha variations. He also became known as a vocal, emotional player – engaging in banter at the tables and never failing to make friends and enemies at the same time. It has been said that Mike Matusow began taking ecstasy and partying heavily in 2000, which stopped him from playing poker. He later turned to harder drugs like cocaine, but returned to playing poker, with great success. Mike claims that, on the advice of a girlfriend, he experimented with speed, which he says improved his poker game to the level that he reached at the final table of the 2001 WSOP. Court records show that in September 2002, Matusow held a party at The Palms hotel in Las Vegas, providing free ecstasy to friends. He was introduced to undercover narcotic agent Mike Fento, who claimed he was involved in an organized crime family in Chicago that planned to open a strip club. Matusow claims that Fento got him involved in money laundering and asked him to score drugs for him. Mike Matusow discovered from one of his dealers that Fento was an agent, but was arrested at his house on September 25, 2003 for "selling and trafficking controlled substances." Mike Matusow claims that the police offered to allow him to wear a wire to help them secure evidence on a nightclub owner, but he refused as the person was connected to organized crime and could have had him killed. Mike Matusow was in prison from September 2004 to April 2005. During this time, Matusow lost his $250,000 winnings from his WPT final table by betting on sports. Despite all of his legal troubles and on air persona, Mike Matusow, has proven that he is a formidable opponent at the Poker table. Mike won his first major tournament at the World Series of Poker in 1999, taking home a bracelet in the $3500 no-limit hold’em event. Several years later, in 2002, he took his second bracelet in the $5000 Omaha hi-lo split tournament, leaving no doubt about his poker skills. And he has become a familiar face on the World Poker Tour with two final tables – one in the third season at the Aruba Poker Classic where he finished third, and the other in the fourth season on the famed Bad Boys of Poker II event as the runner-up. Most recently, in 2005, he won the WSOP Tournament of Champions for $1 million, and he can be seen (and heard) at any casino hosting a major tournament. While he still struggles to keep his emotions and personal life in check, Mike Matusow is much respected and liked by the poker community, and his wins at the poker table keep adding up.
