Chicago Bears-Philadelphia Eagles Week 7 Betting Preview
Betting on this week’s match up between the Chicago Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles involves betting on two of the NFC’s greatest underachievers of 2007. Both teams won their respective divisions last year, but right now they are both ranked at the very bottom of their divisions. Entering Week 7, the Bears and Eagles are both running out of time to turn their seasons around so this is an extremely important game and the NFL betting on this game should reflect the desperation with which both teams will be playing. The Philadelphia Eagles entered the 2007 season as a popular betting pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. The Eagles defense has been fairly strong, putting them in the league’s top ten for every important statistical category. However, the offense has sputtered and questions linger as to whether Donovan McNabb still has what it takes to lead the team. Aside from McNabb’s incredible performance in the Eagle’s memorable 56-21 win over the Lions in Week 3, his quarterbacking has been quite unremarkable. It has not helped that McNabb’s offensive line has done a noticeably poor job of protecting him, allowing a jaw-dropping 12 sacks in Week 4 against the Giants. If McNabb continues to sustain so many sacks, then not only will the Eagles continue losing—McNabb will probably injure himself again. The only player who has saved Eagles betting this year has been running back Brian Westbrook, who is averaging a tremendous 5.8 yards per carry. Nevertheless, Westbrook can only do so much on his own, meaning the Eagles have fallen to 2-3, which leaves them several games behind the Cowboys in the NFC East. Also, NFL bettors know that the NFC East is one of the deepest divisions in the NFL this year, so the Eagles will have to work hard to return to the playoffs. Right now SBG Global is listing the Eagles as 5 point betting favorites for this match up, which will be played in Philadelphia. The Chicago Bears reached the Super Bowl last year and were similarly expected to return to the playoffs this year. However, a pathetic start to the season has the Bears at 2-4 and wallowing at the very bottom of the NFC North. Many fans and bettors were screaming to pull Rex Grossman early in the season due to his penchant for throwing interceptions, but his substitute, Brian Griese, has repeated many of the same mistakes. Perhaps even more worrisome for Bears betting enthusiasts is the fact the traditionally dominating Bears defense has been porous and unreliable this year. The defense is currently allowing an average of 361.3 yards per game, which ranks the unit at 27th in the league. Last week Adrian Peterson alone rushed for a stupefying 224 yards against the Bears. If the Chicago defense does not fix its problems quickly, then we can expect Westbrook to run wild and the Eagles to coast to an easy victory. However, if the Bears defense can stop Westbrook and the Bears offense can limit its turnovers, then this will probably be a very close game and betting on the Bears may present lots of value.
